How does a heat pump work?

• The operation is characterized by a closed-circuit system with a refrigerant inside (for eco-sustainability issues today we almost always use the R-32 refrigerant, also known as difluoromethane or Freon 32) subject to a cyclical change of state, passing from the liquid phase to steam and vice versa; this obviously occurs with an expenditure of electricity, as the heat pump extracts and transfers thermal energy using electricity. According to the laws of technical physics and psychrometry, there will be variations in pressure and temperature and the heat pump exploits these variations that occur at the level of the evaporator and compressor, with an overall result of efficiency or coefficient of performance (COP) very advantageous, even higher than 4-5. It means that for every electric kW spent, as a result you have 4-5 kW of thermal power generated by the system.

Air to air or air to water heat pump? Which to choose?

• Unlike air-to-air pumps, air-to-water heat pumps have a higher initial cost but they also produce domestic hot water, therefore they do not require an extra boiler or traditional system for domestic hot water.
