Pure residual current devices without thermal-magnetic circuit breakers are circuit breakers that provide protection of persons against indirect contacts and additional protection against direct contacts according to IEC EN 61008-1 and IEC EN 61008-2-1.
As they lack a built-in circuit breaker, pure earth leakage circuit breakers must be protected against short circuits by appropriate circuit breakers or fuses.
The APR perturbation-resistant versions are devices specially designed to be immune to untimely trips caused by impulsive leakage due to maneuvering or atmospheric phenomena such as lightning strikes.
The Residual current device serves to protect people and not systems. The moment a person goes to touch it, it creates a circuit with the earth. The current instead of staying in the household circuit, uses the human body to go to ground.
The residual current device is a device in your electrical system. It is capable of opening the circuit, i.e., shutting off the power supply, the moment the current accidentally dissipates.
A residual current device offers protection in the case of current leakage but not in the case of surges. Instead, the circuit breaker is required for this type of problem.
A type A Residual current device tripping is provided for alternating sine differential currents and unidirectional pulsating differential currents applied suddenly or slowly increasing (IEC EN 61008-1).
