A multiway switch is a special switch capable of diverting the current to another wire, unlike the common switch which interrupts the current. This makes it ideal for switching a lamp on and off from two different locations. Let’s see how.

What is a multiway switch
A multiway switch is a switch that can direct electric current between two separate circuits. For example, if connected to a lamp and a socket, depending on the position of the switch, either the lamp or the socket will operate, but never both at the same time. This allows for more flexible and efficient lighting management.
Tools required

To light a two-location lamp with multiway switches, you will need the following equipment:
- Screwdriver
- Wire cutter strippers
- Insulating tape
- Two frames
- Two covers
- Two multiway switches
- One lamp
5-step installation
We have divided the installation process into 5 convenient steps to be carried out in sequence.
1. Electrical isolation
The first thing to do is to isolate the circuit to be worked on by disconnecting the electricity from the residual current device. This ensures safety during the operation.
2. Multiway switches wiring
Wire the two multiway switches to each other. Take one wire and connect it from terminal 1 of the first multiway switch to terminal 2 of the second multiway switch. Then, another wire from terminal 2 of the first multiway switch to terminal 1 of the second one.

3. Phase wiring
Wire the phase coming from the switchboard or junction box to the first multiway switch in terminal L.

4. Lamp wiring
Wire the second multiway switch to the lamp via terminal L. In this way, current will flow through the multiway switches, allowing the lamp to be switched on or off from two different locations.

5. Final installation
Once everything is wired, insert the switch cover and plates. The switch range we use in this guide is the Bticino Axolute anthracite-coloured.

Warnings and precautions
Pay attention to the wires: When inserting the wires into the terminals, ensure that the sheath does not touch the contacts to avoid malfunctions.
Cut the right amount of sheathing to expose the copper wire, but not too much, to avoid accidental contact which could cause short circuits and activate the circuit breaker.

Installing multiway switches to light a lamp from two locations is a simple operation if followed correctly. It is essential to isolate the circuit and pay attention to the connections to ensure safety and optimal operation.
